These paintings accompanied an essay by L Sprague de Camp, entitled The Noble Savage, which dealt with primitive men in heroic situations. In this context primitive means without the benefits of technology (guns etc) rather than uncivilised. It is notable that all the paintings feature the use of swords, daggers or spears (but not teeth even though the article does mention their use too!)
